The Sentier des Douaniers
Fragrant with pine resin and broom, it runs through one of the loveliest woods in Saint-Nazaire, exceptional for the area. Vegetation which is essentially Mediterranean grows here naturally. Umbrella and maritime pines, holm oaks and cypress, all these slow-growing trees provide a genuinely green heritage for the town. There are also plants here such as atriplex and blackthorn complimented by herbaceous species. Popular for summer walks, it winds around beaches and cliffs and offers some magnificent views, from the headland at Chemoulin, for example, where at a bend in the path walkers can glimpse the fishing grounds at the base of the cliff. If you continue on to Pornichet you can pause at the headland at Congrigoux where there is an orientation point to help you pinpoint your location in the marine landscape.
